My husband and I have long dreamed of a trip to the Keys. Is late spring a good time to travel, when would be best (but not hurrucance season).
We plan on flying to Ft. Myers and renting a car. Any recommendations on what to see? Where to stop? WE enjoy a combination of natural beauty - parsk, beaches, and some fine dining and a clean reasonable place to stay.
First time visit to Keys
Spring is a great time to visit the keys, but why fly into Ft. Myers? Miami is a lot closer.
Which Key do you intend to stay on? Do you plan to go all the way to Key West?
First time visit to KeysWe could fly into Miami if that is closer. ANd yes we do plan on going all the way to Key West. Our plans are fairly open as we are just learning about the area.
Any recommendations?
Fly into Ft Lauderdale, about 20 minutes further than Miami but you%26#39;ll save an hour at the airport/car rental. Key West is nice but it%26#39;s a tourist trap and unless you plan on spending your vacation bar hopping you%26#39;ll probally only want to stay there 1 maybe 2 days. Try Holiday Isle in Islamorada they have a nice beach about 6 bars with live entertainment and plenty of water sports. Theater of the sea is close (a minature sea world) John Pennicamp state Park about 30 minutes away in Key Largo. Snorkel the coral reef and make sure you feed the tarpon at Robbies. And remember the sun is a lot stronger down there so don%26#39;t be shy with the sun screen.
Stay away from Holiday Isle in Islamorada. They had a lot of damage from the hurricane and have not cleaned up well. They are converting to condos soon and I think that is the issue. Friends were down recently and said it was messy!!
