am thiking of orlando with my son who is in a wheelchair, i dont drive and want infomation on taxi cab fares and shuttle buses, he really only wants to go to universal and bush gardens hes past the disney age! i here the universal resort is a bit pricey and some one suggested the nearest place to stay would be international drive and that some of the hotels do shuttles to the parks. also how long transfer times from stanford airport to that area and approx cab fare or if any international drive hotels do airport shuttles. thanks in advance debbie uk

I also have a special needs child in a wheelchair...and I think that I find Disney a bit more accomodating than Universal. Nothing against Universal, its a great park. But alot of the rides at Universal, that are not the small kids%26#39; rides, are wild or roller coaster type rides...and will you be able to adequately assist your son on these types of rides? Disney seems to have shows (Disney parade and fireworks) and more rides (I%26#39;m thinking the Peter Pan Ride and the Small World Ride, and even the Tea Cup ride even though its a bit whirlly) that are charming to all ages and at the same time are not so physically jerking. And the boat ride or the monorail ride to the Magic Kingdom is interesting in itself. Have you or your son considered Seaworld? The animal shows are a lot of fun, the Seaworld grounds are beautiful, and the exhibits are interesting. We also find the Disney waterparks to be very accomodating to our child. He can go in the lazy river innertubes with us and the wave pool and some of the fun family raft rides. Also, if your son is a teen, he might enjoy Epcot or Animal Kingdom. I don%26#39;t know what your son%26#39;s abilities are, but he might even find Disney Quest interesting (indoor video type games). And the Cirque du Soleil show, though quite pricey, is magical and if you can afford this, the show is two hours not to be missed. I%26#39;ll try and find some information for you on transportation that is wheelchair accessible.
re orlando with a disabled child
thank you for your help we have been to disney paris a few times and he is 11 now,he actually loves the high thril rides he cant walk but can brace himself which seems to be the criteria for the high thrill rides in the uk, his 3 brothers and sisters have been over the years with other members of my family,the last time being last april and the talk and seeing the rides at universal on the family videos really got him excited he likes to see himself as a big boy now so when i mention disney he sulks and says its for babies! i dont agree i still love it and went to paris in october last with friends! but from what i know about disney i agree it does seem alot easier but i am not one to be put off and like a challenge in fact we have just came back for sri lanka and if i can get round a third world country with a child in a wheelchair am sure orlando wont be so bad! as the rest of family have been a number of times am well up on the places to go the main thing i really ned help finding out is getting around cabs etc and hotels with good disabled facilities. anything you can find out i would be very grateful. thank you. kind regards. debbie

Hi Debbie: Your son should have a great time at Universal then! It seems that the public Trolley system that goes up and down International Drive has wheelchair access and this should help provide transporation locally from your hotel to Universal and Seaworld.
';Each Ičˇ¯Ride Trolley seats 41 riders plus two wheelchair positions and an ADA-specified hydraulic lift system.
For additional information or a detailed map, go to: www.iridetrolley.com.';
I%26#39;ll try and find information on transportation from the airport to your hotel.
Busch Gardens is located in Tampa...which is about an hour and a half ride from Orlando. Do you need information on transportation to Tampa as well?
thank you so much, yes if you can get me some info on getting to bush gardens that would be great, will have a look at the trolley site and i am now about to book my flights and hotel! oh airport transfers info please!! never been to the states but all the rest of my family have and really looking forward to it. debbie
We took our son to florida last year in his wheelchair and must say universal is absolutly brilliant ask for a special pass when you enter the park and you will be able to go into the rides without having to queue as some of the lines are very windy and not always accesible for a chair. We stayed at the best western on international drive and it was great, good staff and shuttles to all the main parks
thanks for that info and guess what i have just booked flight and hotel and thats where i am staying1 not a package done it myself and saved 900 pounds!! the best western movieland is that the one my brother stayed there and said it was fine.
