I have read other reviews that mention that SoBe has topless beaches.
Is this true of most of the beaches around this area, as I am staying in Fort Lauderdale for a week before we venture down to SoBe? It would be great if its ok to go topless on their beaches.
Last year I stayed in Clearwater and I don%26#39;t think I saw anyone topless (apart from the men - obviously) so it felt slightly uncomfortable to be the only one.
Is there a law with regards this?
Any advise please.
Topless Beaches
Well, in fort lauderdale you%26#39;ll find to be more family oriented, the beaches did lose about 15-20 feet of sand during Katrina. I%26#39;ve never seen the shore so close to the road. in MB you have 2 options for Topless and C.O.. at the southern tip of South Beach, lower than say, 7th street, it is generally a topless beach. nobody is bothered unless they are out there to stare and make people uncomfortable. in North Miami Beach at Haulover Park, the north beach is clothing optional, it is patrolled and gawkers have been arrested, so it is very safe, it is a sanctioned activity by the Miami Dade Parks department,Ergo ';legal';. the beach itself is divided in two by a rope marker, the north park is considered the ';Gay'; beach and the southern is mixed
Topless Beaches
SoBe beaches are very much topless.
As you may already know, South Beach is the southern couple of miles or so of Miami Beach, which is a different city from Miami.
For the most part, the streets that run east-west within Miami Beach are numbered streets with 1st Street being the most southern east-west road. Depending upon who you talk with, people consider the northern end of the SoBe area around 18th to 20th street, maybe are far as 22nd street.
We typically hang out near the 17th Street beach access (there is a lifeguard stand there). This is near hotels such as National, Sagamore, Delano and Doubletree Surfcomber. Depending upon the day, there may be only a few topless ladies or more than 50%. As we typically hit the beach early in the morning, my wife is often the first to go topless and usually others follow. I think ladies often set up near the Delano hotel as there is almost always guests there working on removing their tan lines.
It%26#39;s been written that the most common areas for topless sunbathing is between say 8th Street and 20th Street. On a typical day, you will see a fair number of ladies sunbathing topless, some ladies swimming topless, and occasionally ladies walking the beach topless.
Don%26#39;t quote me, but I believe all of Miami Beach is legal to go topless on the beach (but not the parking lot or beyond the beach).
Also know between Fort Lauderdale and South Beach is Haulover Beach. This is one of the few clothing optional public beachs in the US. It is located some 9 miles north of South Beach. The clothing optional section is approx. the most northern 1/3 of Haulover Beach which is the beach part of Haulover Park. We went there on our last SoBe trip and enjoyed it very much. It is one of the friendliest beaches I%26#39;ve ever visited. During the weekend, the clothing optional section is packed. For more information, search for Haulover Beach on the web as well as under ';Attractions'; for ';Miami Beach'; on this web site.
I%26#39;ve met several new friends from the UK while we%26#39;ve been vacationing in SoBe and they all seem to have a great time. I hope you do too!
Cheers.
I am sure we are going to have a fantastic time thanks.
Thanks you so much for all your input and the time you spend giving advise to travellers.
It is very much appriciated.
There is generally far less toplessness in Ft. Lauderdale than there is in Miami. Fort Lauderdale you will probably only see a handfull per block of beach at most, wheras in miami it is common. There is no law against topless bathing in either FLL or MIA. So feel free to do whatever floats your boat.
I shall do just that - Thanks a ton
