Can you buy pay as you go sim cards in the US? If so will I be able to use it in my UK nokia?

we used our nokia with o2 sim in it no probs it changed over automatically and the charges were very resonable not over the top and the weird thing was my txt messages were still free as they are over here and we could still top up using debit or credit card so I suppose it depends what type of nokia you have and which net work you are on, Carley is on virgin which switch auto on to t mobile network and the charges were 拢1.40 a min to make a call and 80p to receive and txt message cost 35p to send and nothing to receive the charges did not change if someone was to txt you from england from there phone to you in the us if on virgin check bundles before you leave and see if they work out better or go on to o2 site and type in o2/mates and request the genie card and bundle for free, for example my genie card costs me 拢10 a mth and I get 100 free mins and 100 free txts for the mth..hope this might help..
