I am planning a trip to Universal next summer with my 8 year old daughter. I am looking for ideas for a good, reasonable priced hotel that is close to Universal Studios, not one of their properties. Thanks!

Need a nice place to stay close to Universal
We stayed at the LaQuinta convention center. It is relatively inexpensive and is within 5 minutes drive to Universal. The rooms are nice and the hotel has a nice (albeit small) pool and they give you a decent continental breakfast. It is right next to a mini golf place too (we didn%26#39;t get to do that though).
Do you know if the La Quinta is near the Sheraton Studio City hotel? I think that was right across from a mini golf course as well...
Beckster, I am not sure about that, I didn%26#39;t pay much attention to other hotels around ours.
The Doubletree at Universal is across the road and very nice
I agree with Vinny. I stayed at the Double Tree in February. It has a great view of the parks, and is very close. I didn%26#39;t have any problems with the hotel or the room, because I was gone ALL day.
thanks for your suggestions, i checked them out and am interested in the doubletree or la quinta. are either of them (or any hotels for that matter) within walking distance? i don%26#39;t plan to rent a car, and any suggestions for transportatin from the hotel to the park would be appreciated. plannning on two days at universal, two at islands and two at sea world. possible to do? thanks %26#39;
Double Tree is in walking distance. On the way back, you may be tired, so you can either catch the free shuttle, or a cab for around 3 dollars.
I know you say that you do not want to be onsite at universal, but do you know that those staying onsite get fast pass access to all rides all day. During busy periods that can be of huge benefit.
I agree with GaryM, staying onsite, like Hard Rock Hotel was priceless with the front of the line on all the rides and you are able to walk back and forth as you please from the hotel to the parks and Citywalk.
